Dan is what many would call a code monkey. You can often find him up until all hours of the morning analysing arrays, validating variables and storing strings.
There are a number of things that Dan specialises in. They include the following:
- Delivering the impossible when it is asked of him.
- Beating code into submission with his bare hands.
- Having the barest, most rudimentary understanding of a few Japanese words, and a mean pronunciation of “Achtung,” the only German word he knows the meaning of.
- Squinting into the sun during photos.
Dan also holds a number of formal qualifications. These include:
- A PhD in Awesomeness.
- License to Code (issued by the Internet Police).
- Black belt in SQL-Fu.
When not coding, Dan spends his time drinking tea, talking in an impossibly deep voice, commenting on art, books and other high-brow subjects and generally being awesome. His hobbies include referring to himself in the third person, inflating the truth and being right in discussions, all of which he enjoys on a regular basis. He hopes you have enjoyed this brief article about him that has told you very little of a serious nature, and asks that you see Addendum A: The Truth when it is written, because he figures that having an addendum makes everything seem more official and important.
Addendum A: The Truth
This is the serious business. I mean, you probably don’t want to read it. I can promise you it’ll be pretty dull after the expectations I built up in you earlier. Who would want to know the boring bits after the pure awesome that you read before? If you don’t want to be bored, you should stop reading now and just remember what I told you up the top there.
So. Still reading? Ok. Your loss, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
When it comes down to it, I’m a pretty average guy, really. I live on the Gold Coast in Australia, and I dropped out of university after doing a year of a Games Design degree, and a year of a Games Programming degree. I now work in IT on a contract basis with a couple of companies.
I’ve been programming, in a manner of speaking, for quite a number of years. After a few years of playing with HTML markup I started programming seriously back when I was in high school; I was taught Javascript and then eventually Java by an older friend who had done a uni course and was then working with a web development company. I did that for a year or two, and then started exploring PHP. My interest dropped during the last two years of high school, and I looked into graphic design. Since then, I have built my PHP skills signficiantly, learnt enough C++ to get by thanks to the year of games programming I did and I’m now focusing on .NET development with C#.
Still here? Well done!
I thought people would have given up by now. That’s most of the boring stuff out of the way.
As for what I like to do, I enjoy gaming (I bet you didn’t guess that when you read what I was studying) and watching sci-fi and anime. I also like taking photos and I’m hoping to travel to most parts of the world at some point during my life. I’ve already visited Japan and the USA, so that’s two places crossed off the list. I’m planning on going for my Scuba Diving License and my Pilot’s License at some point as well. I’m sure there’s a flying fish joke around here somewhere, but I just can’t put my finger on it.
This blog is essentially a place for me to put my photos, holiday news and any small projects I work on up. I usually put small articles up covering events that are relevant to my interest, and hopefully someone will enjoy reading them. If I find a particularly frustrating problem or stupid bit of code, I might just rant about that for a while as well. Hopefully someone will get something out of it, and if not, well, I guess I’ll never know that they didn’t.
That’s pretty much me, I’m sure that if you’re ever at an event in Brisbane involving games or anime, you’ll see me at some point. I’ll probably be the crazy guy (or one of the crazy guys) with the camera. See you around!
